Blind Date Sparked Film Festival

When Greg Lalas got set up on a blind date in April by some mutual friends with a woman who shared two of his biggest passions -- soccer and writing -- little did he know what the future would hold. Although that date at a bar in the Chelsea section of Manhattan didn't exactly lead to romance with Rachel Markus, the two did end up seeing a lot more of each other.

As the pair chatted, Markus told Lalas of her attempt to stage a soccer-themed film festival at London's Craven Cottage -- home to Fulham of the Premier League -- while she was living in England. A week before it was set to take place, the screening was canceled.

But as Lalas and Markus, who works in the film industry, talked that April night, the idea of staging a soccer film festival in the United States came up and thus the Kicking & Screening International Soccer Film Festival was born.

U.S. on Brink of World Cup Berth

This much is simple for the U.S. national team's Saturday night 2010 World Cup qualifier at Honduras. If the U.S. leaves San Pedro Sula with three points, then it automatically qualifies for next June's World Cup in South Africa. Anything else? Well it's so confusing that the U.S. Soccer site has established a scenario generator to run through all the possible outcomes.

It's also known that a) the U.S. is stepping into a tricky road environment in a country in the midst of a political crisis, b) the U.S. won't have midfielder Clint Dempsey and c) the game will not be seen in America except for select closed circuit establishments.

Alexi Lalas Eager to Bring 'Soccer People Together' at Film Festival

Ever since he burst onto the worldwide scene at the 1994 World Cup thanks in part to his unmistakable fiery red goatee and flowing locks, Alexi Lalas has been one of the Apostles of spreading the world on U.S. soccer.

In the 15 years since the U.S. announced its ambition on the world stage, Lalas has witnessed the gradual steps as soccer awareness in America has slowly crept from the fringes, edging closer to the mainstream.

So when his brother Greg decided to host a soccer-themed film festival -- Kicking & Screening -- earlier this year in New York, he jumped at the chance to help. And when Greg Lalas decided to host another event next week in Washington, well, Alexi Lalas was going to be there to both help his brother and help spread the gospel of soccer.

Clint Dempsey Ruled Out vs. Honduras

American midfielder Clint Dempsey will be out vs. Honduras due to a seperated shoulder. For fans of the U.S. national team clamoring for midfielder Clint Dempsey to move from the right side of midfield to the right side of the bench, well, they've gotten their wish, though the circumstances aren't exactly ideal.

Dempsey has been ruled out for Saturday's 2010 World Cup qualifier at Honduras due to a shoulder sprain. Dempsey picked up the injury in the closing minutes of Fulham's 2-2 draw Sunday vs. West Ham United. His status for next Wednesday's final qualifier vs. Costa Rica in Washington is still unknown.

US Survives vs. Trinidad and Tobago

Ricardo ClarkIt's a good thing that style points don't count for very much in international soccer. Wednesday night, in a must-win 2010 World Cup CONCACAF qualifier, the U.S. squeezed by Trinidad and Tobago in Port-of-Spain by the narrowest of 1-0 margins.

Ricardo Clark's bending blast from just outside the penalty area was the only moment of inspiration or brilliance for the U.S. on the night -- but it proved to be enough to secure the precious three points. The win temporarily pushes the U.S. to the top of the CONCACAF Hexagonal with 16 points, pending the result of Mexico/Honduras later Wednesday night.

England, Spain Punch Ticket to South Africa

Wayne Rooney and England qualified for the 2010 World Cup Wednesday beating Croatia. Wednesday England became the ninth team to qualify for the 2010 World Cup thanks to its comprehensive 5-1 victory over recent nemesis Croatia at Wembley Stadium. Manager Fabio Capello completed the turnaround for the Three Lions in the first cycle after missing out on Euro 2008 as they improved to 8-0-0 in qualifiers.

What made England's victory a double-delight is that midfield stars Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard each scored twice. Former England coaches Steve McClaren and Sven-Goran Eriksson were continually criticized for their failure to find a system where both Premier League standouts could function successful for the country.

Wayne Rooney also scored, keeping him atop the UEFA qualifiers leaderboard with nine goals.

Gio Dos Santos Revives Mexico

Mexico star Gio Dos Santos scored the game-winner vs. Costa Rica Saturday ngiht. In the wake of Mexico's 3-0 demolition of Costa Rica on the fast turf of Saprissa late Saturday night, fans of El Tri ought to be grateful coach Javier Aguirre doesn't have the same policy for playing young players as his U.S. counterpart Bob Bradley.

After spending most of the summer worrying whether or not if Mexico would get out of CONCACAF World Cup 2010 qualification, El Tri are squarely back in the mix for one of the region's three automatic spots thanks to 20-year-old rising star Gio Dos Santos.

FIFA Lays the Smackdown on Chelsea

FIFA has banned Chelsea from signing any new players until 2011 because of its signing of Gael Kakuta from Lens in 2007. Let's face it, Chelsea isn't exactly the most beloved club soccer team in the world. Whether it's because you loathe how Roman Abramovich ushered in a new era of big-money transfers when he bought the West London club in 2003 or you can't stand the on-field antics of guys like Didier Drogba, the Blues are a team many soccer fans love to hate.

Love them or hate them, from a logical standpoint Thursday's FIFA ruling that Chelsea cannot sign another player until 2011 because the club induced French teenager Gael Kakuta to breach his contract with French club Lens in 2007 at first glance seems extremely harsh.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Target in La Liga Debut

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored Monday for Barcelona. ESPN's commitment to airing European soccer matches continued Monday afternoon when instead of the block of "Around the Horn" and "Pardon the Interruption" it was reigning La Liga champion Barcelona hosting Sporting Gijon in their 2009-10 league debuts.

Viewers were able to watch as Barcelona dominated over the 90 minutes at Camp Nou winning 3-0 with big-money summer transfer Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring on a header in the 83rd minute.

Mistakes Cost Michael Bradley

Before reading any further, it's probably best to watch the video embedded above. Let's call that the good the Michael Bradley.

Fans of the U.S. National Team have seen plenty of the good Bradley, the player that's a box-to-box midfield force who's chipped in with six goals in 34 international appearances, while simultaneously establishing himself at SC Hereenveen in the Dutch Eredivisie and currently at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the German Bundesliga.
