Charlie Davies Leaves D.C. Hospital

Charlie DaviesOne month after a late-night car accident that killed a young woman and shattered his World Cup dreams, U.S. national team forward Charlie Davies was released from a Washington D.C. hospital Tuesday. The 23-year-old said he's committed to returning to the field, although his doctor said the forward has a long road ahead.

"I would like to take the time to thank everyone who has dealt with me in the [Washington] Hospital Center and [National Rehabilitation Hospital] for really putting in the time to help me get better as a person and as an athlete," Davies said in a statement. "I continue to improve every day and I look forward to getting back on my feet and attacking rehabilitation. Thank you for everyone's support, it really means a lot to me."

Davies was hurt early in the morning of Oct. 13, the day before the national team's final World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica at D.C.'s RFK Stadium. He was not driving, but was out well after curfew. One of the two women in the car was killed, and the other, rumored to be the driver, suffered injuries thought to be less severe than Davies. The player suffered multiple fractures to his leg, elbow and face, in addition to a lacerated bladder.

Davies' doctor, James DeBritz, said, "Charlie faces a long recovery from his orthopaedic injuries. It will take time and extensive physical therapy for his bones and soft tissue to heal. However, his overall health, age and positive attitude should help him to have a good outcome."

The investigation into the accident reportedly is continuing.

The national team will play friendlies at Slovakia on Saturday and at Denmark on Nov. 18.
