File this under the worst week ever for U.S. soccer's all-time leading goal scorer Landon Donovan. As if losing to Mexico 2-1 on Wednesday wasn't bad enough, Thursday night Donovan told Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl that he tested positive for the H1N1 flu virus. Donovan told Wahl that he felt ill before the U.S. team arrived in Mexico City for its CONCACAF World Cup qualifier on Wednesday and most likely contracted the virus in the United States. Still, he soldiered through the sickness and played all 90 minutes in the altitude and heat of Azteca Stadium, sending the through ball that set up Charlie Davies ninth minute goal which gave the U.S. a brief 1-0 lead.
Central and South American soccer have already been affected by the swine flu outbreak, with the Mexican league shutting its doors briefly to help quell the spread of the virus earlier this year. There was also controversy when South American club teams balked at traveling to Mexico during the height of the panic for international club tournaments.
Still, Donovan's contraction of the virus is the first time it's seemed to cross the border into American soccer circles, and it makes him one of the highest profile players in any sport to be diagnosed with the virus. The Los Angeles Times reports that he likely contracted it from some Los Angeles Galaxy staffers.
That said, it doesn't appear to be life threatening for Donovan, who says he might even play this weekend for the Los Angeles Galaxy when they take on the Seattle Sounders.

Well shucks man, it did seem like quite the coinky-dink at first… given that he was in swine-flu land. But hey, I’d hate Mexico anyway. Not out of xenophobia, but because they don’t have a single player who’s not a total jackass.
If Lamps or Rio came back from some third world country with some bizarre illness I think you guys over there would get a little curious too.

at least he's not using it as an excuse as to why USA lost. that's probably why he chose to play and show up anyway.

Aw c'mon folks, some of the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan have been hit with H1N1 flu - they haven't traveled to Mexico, and haven't been in contact with anyone who has! It's got to be airborne, and it seems if you've had it once, you don't get it again... like chicken pox....

I am an American living in Mexico!
I went to the game since Adidas provided my family and I with great tickets where we watched a Mexican team 85% of the time dominating a U.S. team that lacked conditioning, tactical and worst of all...sportsmanship. There were about 119 thousand Mexican fans dressed in green and about 1000 US fans dressed in red tells the story of how much the US team had against them besides the altitude, climate and environment conditions. Mexico is a country of good people for the most part. They don't like us Americans because of the way we are and treat them and 99% of all other nations. It is not something new! It is sad to find out Donovan got the Influenza in the U.S., but it very obvious that Donovan is jealous of David Beckham (just read his recently published book) and the Mexican Soccer league that that although he grew up with Mexican descendants in California where he also learned to play, he never learned to appreciate the wonderful culture Mexicans have. I was talking to the owner of a professional soccer club in Mexico and he said that no Mexican team would be interested in bringing him to Mexico to play. Although, Donovan makes sort of good money playing for the Galaxy, any Mexican club would have the money to double or triple the salary he makes in the U.S., but he is not liked or respected by the players or people that run the clubs down here.
It is his arrogant and immature attitude towards Mexico that close any doors for him in this wonderful country. Since Donovan and the U.S. Team were not able to beat Mexico after all of the U.S. media speculation that this U.S. Team would be able to come to Mexico at Azteca and beat Mexico for the first time in history...more crap, beer and everything else fell from the sky to shower spoil brat Donovan, the rest of the U.S. players as well as myself as well as thousands of other fans that were sitting close to the field.
In all honesty, the U.S. has a good team, but Mexico is a better and more matured soccer culture. It was not the British that invented soccer, it was the Aztecs...just read about the ancient Aztec culture to figure it out! So let's not kid ourselves, we are still decades behind in loving the sport the way the rest of the word does.
The U.S. Soccer Federation treats the Mexican Team like crap when they go to the U.S. to play against us. They make them practices in fields full holes of melted snow in the outskirts of Columbus, while the U.S. Team practices at Ohio State state-of-the-art artificial turf. They treat us the same way we treat them. That's why there is a rivalry that goes beyond geographical borders of ideologies. We dislike each other in soccer as much as Brazilians and Argentines hate each other when they have to play World Cup elimination rounds.
What would happen if a Mexican player would have been carrying the Influence virus and he had played against the U.S. team in American soil? Americans would have sent an army of doctors to the places where the Mexican team would have been staying. It is incredibly embarrassing to hear the level of excuses Donovan gave the media after the game. It is interesting how he claims to have played the game last Wednesday feeling already sick with the darn flu. Donovan should take it like a man and accept that the U.S. lost because they were out matched and out coached throughout the 90 minute game. Donovan is a good player, but that all goes away in the eyes of many people when he opens his mouth.
The U.S. is not like Mexico where they breath, sleep and eat soccer everyday. Just look at their professional league! Take a look at any street in Mexico City and you'll find kids of all ages kicking a soccer ball all day long. It is because of players like Donovan that we are hated in CONCACAF. We simply deserve what we get in Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and other CONCACAF nations. Outside of CONCACAF and the soccer world, we are very much hated as well. Let's use common sense and start calling them as they are, so that we stop doing what we are doing, including supporting or glorifying the crap Donovan tells the media and the American fans.
The fans at Azteca Stadium treated my wife, our two children and I with respect, but unfortunately, we have absurd bloggers, journalist and players that do not know how to lose or accept publicly when some one is better than we are.
We need to change within ourselves before we can rise to the next level in many aspects that include being part of the soccer world.

Soccer? We do not give a rip about soccer here. How many Mexicans have made a million playing in the NFL here in the states?

Continuing to play the game while he's got the swine flu is not heroic, it's foolish and inconsiderate to all the other people he could be infecting.
Both of my kids came down with Swine Flu just before the last week of school. As soon as they were diagnosed at the ER, I kept them home and stayed home with them for 10 days. I mean I didn't go to the store or anything. We all missed the last week of school (I also work in their district) but at least we did what we could to contain it. Granted, we're not important athletes who just can't miss a game. :sarcastic eyeroll: My kids are fine now thank God, we were some of the lucky ones, but it was the scariest week of my life.

I've never liked Donovan and stupid decisions like this one just make me dislike him even more. I know he's not the only arrogant one but i can't stand it when it comes to him and although he's not directly blaming the loss on not feeling well, he's trying to give himself an excuse. As big of a deal that was made about the swine flu it was a idiotic decion to ignore the diagnosis, not really for his sake but for the sake of others. In my mind what he meant for to seem brave and heroic was just plain asnine

I cheer 4 the U.S outta loyalty and although I know the likliyhood of them getting past halfway decent treams is slimits nice whe it happens. but portugal, spain and england is who I trully root for when it comes down to teams that can hold their own
