Circle September 20 on your calendars. That's the day Manchester City comes to Old Trafford in the 2009-10 Premier League season and it'll be bringing a familiar face along -- Carlos Tevez. Monday afternoon suddenly cash-flush City continued it's summer spending spree by inking the Argentina striker to a five-year deal, shortly after he couldn't agree to a permanent deal with the three-time defending Premier League champions.
Tevez joins other City marquee summer signings Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz.
The move also gives City manager Mark Hughes a monopoly on smallish, incredibly talented attacking players in the Premier League, as Tevez joins a lineup that includes: Robinho, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Stephen Ireland. (Obviously this group needs a nickname.)
How much of an impact Tevez will make a City, a squad that already has a bevy of attack-minded players, remains to be seen. Tevez, though, did carve out a roll at United, which at the time featured plenty of world class attackers too, with Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Dmitiar Berbatov, etc. Plus, perhaps Tevez's best attribute is his work ethic, because when he's on the field he tends to leave it all out there. In two years with United, he made 63 appearances and scored 19 goals, which is a pretty good return, especially since many of them came at important times during matches.
One issue that isn't exactly clear at the timing of the City signing is whether Tevez's rights were still owned by Media Sports Investments, which caused all sorts of havoc when he ended up at West Ham in 2006, going as far as for Sheffield United to sue the Irons after the Blades were relegated following the 2006-07 season.
More intriguing than that is how Tevez is received by the Manchester United faithful on Sept. 20. Tevez stated last week he felt the fans would forgive him and understand his decision. We'll see about that.
