Arshavin, Arsenal Put a Crimp in Liverpool's Premership Plans

So...that's what all the fuss about Andrei Arshavin was all about. The Russian playmaker tallied a spectacular four-goal performance Tuesday in Arsenal's 4-4 draw with Liverpool at Anfield, which clearly earned 'Instant Classic' status.

The Russian star all but put an end to Liverpool's title hopes with his fourth goal of the day on a 90th minute, finishing off a counter attack after a Reds corner. Even Arshavin himself seemed stunned by his performance with a shrug while sticking out four fingers.

Liverpool salvaged a draw thanks to Yossi Benayoun's 92nd minute goal. It was little consolation, since Liverpool is now even with Manchester United with 71 points, but two more games played. (Manchester United plays Portsmouth Wednesday.)

Granted the Premier League lends itself to hyperbole, but what is in store for Arsenal with a full season with Arshavin in the lineup? Obviously Tuesday's eruption was an aberration, but the Russian seems the perfect player for Arsene Wenger's team.

You could split hairs that two of Arshavin's two goals were results of poor Liverpool clearances, but he showed pinpoint precision on his shots. Put it this way, how many players would miss those chances?

Arsenal haven't lost a match since December 2008, a span of over 20 games. Will Wenger's commitment to youth finally reap its rewards come next season? It might be a little early to label them the Young Invincibles, but time will tell.

In the big picture, it's probably about time to check the water around Anfield, or the rest of the Premier League -- which has suddenly gotten goal-crazy. Chalk it up to tired legs and or extended schedules for the big clubs, since there appear to be a ton of weary legs on defenders in the final 20 minutes of matches.
