German and Polish Fans Clash at EURO 2008

Text Size A A A

Here's shocking news you'll never believe. Germans and Poles fought with each other in Austria ahead of their national teams' EURO 2008 Group B match against each other. 17 people were arrested, and police are gearing up for more potential clashes.

UEFA had marked the Germany v. Poland match as one having a "high risk" for violence. I couldn't possibly imagine why. I suspect the Polish tabloid that published this Photoshopped image of Poland manager Leo Beenhakker holding up the severed heads of Michael Ballack and Joachim Low didn't help matters very much.

UPDATE (6/9): The arrest total climbed to 157 people after the game.
