Well, that could have been better.
David Beckham's free kick led to a John Terry header in the 38th minute, while Gareth Barry's through ball in the 59th minute -- Barry's first touch of the game after coming on for Frank Lampard -- led to an easy Steven Gerrard goal as England pretty much owned USA, winning 2-0 in Wembley Stadium.
Bob Bradley's side was thoroughly dominated in this one. England had the better of possession and attack almost the entire way. Much of the first half was clearance practice for the American defenders, and someone forgot to mark Terry in the box. That might make him feel a little better after that slip-up in Moscow.
The USA could barely mount an attack until near the end, and even then, late subs Eddie Lewis and Freddy Adu barely troubled Fabio Capello's side. Guys like Ricardo Clark and Josh Wolff posed no threat to England, and even Michael Bradley seemed to disappear for large stretches of the game. The USA really could have used Landon Donovan, Jozy Altidore and possibly more Adu in that lineup.
If this was a measurement for his club, Bob Bradley may find that his side just didn't measure up. He will need to take a different tack against Spain next week. If the US plays the next two games like it played today, it will be lucky to see a draw before it sees Barbados in June.
