Plenty of English media blowhards have been chiding the FA for hiring Italian Fabio Capello to be the England national team's manager, suggesting that his English-speaking skills are suspect. Not to worry, England fans! Capello is brushing up his language skills with the help of a very special tutor -- Basil Fawlty.Fab Cap is a huge fan of classic 70s TV sitcom Fawlty Towers. He has been picking up bits of English from bungling hotel boss Basil, played by John Cleese in a bid to improve his grasp of the English language.
The new gaffer will take a crash course in our lingo to try to get through to underperforming stars.
Capello's last job was with Real Madrid, so he's probably gotten plenty of use out of the line, "You'll have to forgive him. He's from Barcelona." Of course, if he fails to get England through World Cup qualifying, thousands of said blowhards will be sure to chime in and say, "It's alright, he's only choking."
Regardless, Capello is learning his English from somewhere, which will help him with his players -- so long as they don't mention the war. (What? One reference too many?)
