Someone at Major League Soccer is going to get canned for this. After all, everyone else got the memo that they were supposed to lay down and die so that the Los Angeles Galaxy could make the MLS Cup playoffs. The Colorado Rapids knew what to do -- lose 1-0 to lowly Real Salt Lake on Saturday. Certainly, the Chicago Fire would do the same on Sunday and sacrifice for the good of the league, yes?
Uh-uh. John Thorrington scored the game's only goal in stoppage time to give Chicago a 1-0 win and the final playoff spot. Seriously, how can MLS call itself a real soccer league if it can't even fix games right? Horrible.
Maybe Beckham should have stayed on the bench for a few more games for the Galaxy. Since he returned to the lineup on Thursday, the Galaxy lost the rhythm it developed after Beckham sprained a knee in the SuperLiga final. Without Becks, the Galaxy took 16 points in 6 games, giving the team a shot at the playoffs. With Becks? No goals in almost two hours to end the season. That's no good.
Say what you will about the Galaxy, but this team was stubborn enough to stay in the hunt until the end. If they can get Beckham for a full season and incorporate him into the lineup properly, they could rebound in 2008. For now, though, MLS fans will have to be content with learning how to spell "Cuauhtemoc." They should. He's pretty good, too.

Nuts - as a DC fan, I probably would have preferred facing LA to facing Chicago in the first round.
Oh well, we got the Shield, so that's hardware plus admission into pretty much any international competition. Playoffs are for the losers.
