Hope Solo, the goalie who was benched prior to Team USA's 4-0 shellacking at the hands of Brazil, has been quite vocal about just how wrong coach Greg Ryan was to make that decision. And although she's been criticized in some quarters for calling out Ryan and teammate Briana Scurry, there's one place where everyone seems to agree with Solo: Her MySpace page.
Solo's Friends Comments include:
hey hope!And:
I'm very upset about the decision your coach have made yesterday!and it's a pity that we can't see a final USA vs. germany I would have really enjoyed this!
I wish you the best for your future and that it was the last time for you sitting on the bench...
:) greetz
I want you to know that I'm 100% behind you. I think Coach Ryan made one of the 2 biggest coaching blunders in the history of sports (right along side Tretiak being benched in the 1980 Olympics in the USA/USSR hockey game, although I'm thankful for that one). And:
I truly believe that what your coach did was so WRONG!!The guy who makes the 1980 Olympics comment seems a little old for MySpace, but other than that, I think these comments are RIGHT!! Ryan really did screw this up.

Ryan could have put Gordon Banks in the goal and it wouldn't have made a difference. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Banks
Brazil was light years better than the U.S. We were very fortunate to have eeked out a victory over them in the last Olympics, when they easily outplayed us, but this time, there was no chance.

Hope and everyone who thinks she was right on making comments about the USA's National Team Coach and teammates have really no sense of being of what a team player is, and let alone being an example of a class player, we forget about Honor and discipline, fairplay and respect, No, we have to make it about ourselves, about what they did or did not do to us, STOP IT, next thing you know we will have a Terrell Owens in Soccer Bad mouthing and saying everything that is not becoming of an athlete, Mistakes are easy to make, but being an example....

This support for Solo is grossly misguided. Folks are clearly clueless about the nature of the game, its rapid evolution and the plight of coach having to deal with an old-fashioned set of players.

quit hiding behind the "honor, discipline, fair play and hard work" jibberish. her coach was completely wrong.....he had no basis to sit her, why would he sit her, she hasn't been scored on. would you sit someone in the biggest game that hasn't been scored on? the coach was paid off or he is having a sexual relationship with the backup goalie.
it's not even close, it's not like she's played poorly. if she was a bum then he could justify it but she's the best goalie.
her coach will be fired without a doubt and all you noobs that whine about "team" will shut up. in soccer the only person that matters is the goalie, the goalie is the team.

I have followed the women's national team for over twenty years. I've played and coached soccer, my daughter was a college goalkeeper. No one, no one understands the chemistry between the goalkeeper and the rest of the team like those that have been in the game. You should never, never change that position unless there is an injury. I don't know if the team would have won with Hope Solo, but they would at least had a stronger showing.

Elite athletes are able to contain and control their anger and frustration when things don't go right. You're obviously not close to being there yet. Bottom line: did your actions help your team? Sleep on that one. You have a lot of growing up to do.

Hope,
I sincereley believe that Brazil would not have won had you been the goalie. Briana was great at one time, but that was then. Her reflexes today are not what they were then. The coach erred when he replaced you with Briana. However, right now the team is emotional and not listening to reason. Even Pele could not be the greatest soccer player forever. He had to be replaced also (or retired in other words). The time has come to retire Briana while she has not lost the USA too many opportunities to win. I for one, would like for Briana to go down in US soccer history as "that goalie who made so many saves" and not the opposite.

I think as a Team Mate you should at least support your team mates. I think her last name fits her perfect. SOLO, ok so she is a great goalie but soccer is not just a great goalie it’s a whole team. And I don’t think Solo could have change the possession problem USA had that game. So Ms. Solo if you have not notice soccer is a team effort and you bashed the goalie that played for your team. I think you should think twice before you comment.
Though I do agree that your coach made a poor decision, and your whole TEAM was affected not just your ego.

Hope,
I am Brazilian and was appalled with coach Greg Ryan's decision to bench you. When I heard he had replaced you with Briana Scurry I immediately knew the game was over before it even began. What was he thinking? I guess that is the point. He was NOT thinking. You are an experienced superb goalie and if it had been you at goal, I know the outcome would have been different. There were at least two goals that I have no doubt that you would have saved with no sweat. Coach Ryan should be fired. He totally dismantled the team with his unprecedented decision. The USA did not loose to Brazil. Coach Greg Ryan did. I am 100% behind you Hope. Hold your head high and be proud. You had a magnificent World Cup and the world had the honor to watch you play.

Hope,
I understand how exasperating it is to be such a competitor and yet have to helplessly sit on the sidelines and watch your team and your country flounder because of a coach's decision. I played on an AAU basketball team that toured Europe and Russia. I sat the bench while we were thoroughly trounced by the Russians in six straight games. The coach made no adjustments and team play was uninspired to say the least. It was humiliating. His poor judgement reflected badly on all of us and on our country.
I heard your comments and it was clear that you were not attacking any teammate. You were merely describing your coach's misguided and erroneous thought process. His poor judgement cost the team and he should be man enough to admit that. What is more, he should have set his pride aside and put you in the match when it became obvious your teammate was not up to the challenge that day.
Sports gives us the opportunity to learn life lessons. This won't be the last time something like this happens to you. It will occur many times in your working career. You will have to learn to make allowances for others shortcomings and focus on those things you can control.
Best Wishes.

Greg Ryan was the fifth choice of the ineffective Sunil Gulati and was April Heireichs' (a true disaster of a coach)hatchet man; see Brandi Chastain. He coaches as if he were leading a bad high school team and has eliminated the midfield build up which has been the trademark of the US Women's soccer team. Hope Solo chose the wrong venue for her angst but for Ryan to seek her banishment is juvenile and petulent. The team suffered an emotional jolt that they could not recover from when Brianna Scurry was placed in goal. Greg; never, ever, ever change the horses that brung ya. I was associated with the "91's" through refereeing and have been a huge supporter of women's football. Sunil Gulati is a devisive egomaniac who needs to be replaced along with Greg Ryan who achieved his 51 consecutive wins on the coattails of a great team and not through any brilliant coaching descisions.

Here's a little something Briana said regarding sitting behind Siri Mullinix:
There's no doubt in Briana Scurry's mind. If she had been the starting goalkeeper four years ago in Sydney, the U.S. women's soccer team would have won the gold medal.
"I put myself into that entire game,'' she said. ....And I've always felt -- and I still feel -- that if I were playing, we would have won.
someone tell me how this is any diffrent.

Evidently coach Greg Ryan never heard of the slogan "Ride the horse until he drops." Dumb decision to bench Hope and replace her with Briana. Hope theme song when she is introduced to any event should "My Way" since she said was truly felt and not she would have knelt.

Seriously though, stop blaming the loss on just the switch of the goalie and the coach. How much points did U.S. Score? 0!! Stop looking for people to blame. Brazil has an incredibly talented team for the amount of funding they get, and they worked hard to win. Just keep practicing to get better, and beat them next time. Look in the present, not the past.

Bravo to HOPE, for speaking her mind in the 1st place. In this PC world, its refreshing to hear some raw honesty. As for her replacement in the Brazil/Brasil game, note to HOPE, it was likely a political decision by Coach G.Ryan to replace you, as in doing so he had nothing to lose. If he'd lost with Hope or Brianna he would've been blamed for such & lost his job. Had he won with Hope it would've been come ce, come ca, as the US was the the #1 rated Team. Had he won with Brianna, however, he would've looked like a genius, and thus be assured of his job through the Olympics.. Hang tough, HOPE, as everyone, INCLUDING your SUPPOSED US teammates know that the US Women's Soccer Team is far better off with YOU, than without...

Hope Solo dedicated her play in the world cup to her father, who lost his life earlier this year. The coach knew this and so did her "teammates". The way she spoke out after the team's loss to Brazil was caused by overwhelming emotion. Try and put yourself in her position. The young woman was hurting inside and I'll guarantee it wasn't because she was pulled for another goalkeeper, but because she felt she wasn't allowed to keep the promise she made to her dad's memory. I blame Hope for nothing. I put the blame squarely on the coach's shoulders. He is at fault for this debacle. And as far as Hope's "teammates" go,shame on the lot of you. Stay strong Hope, you have more fans than you realize. One more thing,a plea to Tony D. When you begin coaching for the Boston Breakers, please, bring Hope along to be our starting goalkeeper. Peace.
