Antonio Puerta, the Sevilla wingback who suffered two heart attacks yesterday including an on-field cardiac arrest, has died in hospital today at the age of 22. Puerta collapsed on-field yesterday during a match with Getafe, but walked off under his own power before suffering a second heart attack in the locker room that required resuscitation by medical staff.
Sevilla's match against AEK later today has been cancelled due to the tragedy. And that is the right word: tragedy. A 22 year old with all the promise in the world has something completely outside of his control-- arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy--end his life before it's even really started, robbing a wife of her husband, a child of its father, and Sevilla fans of a budding young star in front of their eyes. Tragedy is a word with too much mileage, sure--but with something this random and stunning, it's the only word to use.Sorry, No Photos

I don't know the first thing about soccer (Spanish or otherwise), but I recently read this story and the outcome has haunted me ever since. What a terrible loss for his family and friends and for the unborn child he never met. As a fellow citizen of the earth, I offer my heartfelt sadness and condolences along with prayers and best wishes for all who knew Antonio. God rest his soul.

What a tragic way to begin a new season. I assume that La Liga will do right by Puerto's memory (possibly even Real Betis supporters).

It is always sad to hear when someone dies but it increases 10-fold when the person who died is so very young! My prayers to the family of this young man.

This is a heartbreaker. It affects so many people due to his very young age.Im going to research the term.
Regular right ventricular cardyomyopathy is an enlargement of the ventricle, but only the BEGINNING
of heart disease usually late 40s into your 60s.
The only consolation is I hope he loved the sport and his career, and he went down doing what he loved.
And I hope his family is cared for,and not forgotten about 2 weeks later.

This is quite sad and my heart goes out to his family and his team. I don't follow soccer at all but so young to be taken.
I follow figure skating and we had a very similar loss in 1995 when we lost Sergei Grinkov, the 2 time pairs Olympic Gold Medalist at the age of 25. He left behind his wife and skating partner Ekaterina and a beautiful 3 year old daughter Daria.

My condolences to his wife and unborn chid and other loved ones. If it is any comfort to them he will see his child from heaven and they will all see each other again some day. God will hold all of you in his and comfort you. Never forget to tell the people you care about how much you care about them and love them each time you you talk to them because none of us know how long we have on this earth. GOD BLESS all of you-you will be in my prayers always. May your lives be blessed from now until eternity. With Love in Christ, Tery Ann Cox

I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Antonio Puerta. It is so very sad that at the young age of only 22 his life on this earth has ended. It reminds us that at any moment, no matter what age, no matter what we are doing, we could pass on. We only inhabit this particular physical body for one lifetime, but the length of that lifetime is determined by what God has in store for us. Antonio's spirit will live on, as it will for all of us once this body expires. While we are here it is important to live the best life we can live, be as good to everyone as we can, touch as many lives as possible, and maintain a peaceful spirit.

Such a young person! Deep condolences to family, friends, teammates, and whomever was involved with him...it's just plain sad. I wonderwhy an alarm of sorts didn't go off to reaize something was terribly wrong to cause his ticker to fail. I would think that upon that he would be treated with the utmost care until he was at the hospital with the equipment and staff to assist him....because this was so unexpected from a young person....being brave, the crowds, all appearances aside.

22 is not even an adult yet, so the death of someone at the beginning of their career is particularly tragic. My heart goes out to his family as they try to cope with this difficult time. Is there a possibility that his death could bring the necessary attention to heart diseases like arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy so his tragic death could save others?
