The good folks at Reuters Soccer Blog looked at that goal and thought, "Gee, that looks awfully familiar..."
Yes, it seems Messi is no longer satisfied with just emulating Diego Maradona. Now he's emulating Zinedine Zidane as well. Messi must be a footballing genius if he's stealing all these moves. Whose famous feats will he swipe next? Pele? George Best? One of David Beckham's famed set pieces?
Barcelona fans probably don't care who Messi emulates next, so long as it's not Joey Barton.

I appreciate some futball as much as the next guy, but this is a reach. Similar volleys, but they are on completely different sides of the pitch.
yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away ...

If Messi's going to bend it like golden balls he's going to have to take over set-piece duties from Riquelme and Ronaldinho.

While you are right that he does not take set pieces (aside from corners), what are you talking about? Riquelme left Barca three years ago. Get with it.

Wow, when I watched the first goal, I knew exactly which goal it matched up with perfectly. Good catch. Imagine my surprise to see for the second some random, though very nice, goal from Zidane that looks nothing like it.
Here's the goal Messi was copying:

ACtually, I thought you were going to say it looked like Benny Feilhaber's goal against Mexico for the US in this year's Gold Cup, because it was a carbon copy of that! I guess that wasn't the "sexy " pick though.

It was the boys at Reuters who compared the Messi goal to the Zidane goal, so I wanted to put the video of those two goals side by side. Now that I look at them, though, the Messi & Feilhaber goals do look a bit more alike.
Come to think of it, didn't Clint Mathis have a goal just like that last night in the Red Bulls-Galaxy game?
