As expected, there's YouTube footage of David Beckham warming up on the RFK Stadium sidelines from three different angles. I chose the one above because of the flashbulbs coming out of the crowd. That's almost halfway toward what you would see at a Super Bowl kickoff -- for a guy jogging on the sidelines.
Plenty of photos showed up on Flickr last night, too. Americans may still be warming up to soccer, but when it comes to celeb-watching, they wrote the book.

Come'on, you can't make a comment like 'GET REAL' without looking at the evidence. Look at the flashbulbs lighting, look at the fact that Beckham jersey currently outsells Reggie Bush and Dwyane Wade, and that the entire MLS sales have gone up 300%.
Guess who's buying these merchandise and watching these games? Americans.
So is MLS dominating the culture, no, not even close, but is America warming up to soccer? yes, it is.

I am by no means a soccer fan but have lately been going to DC United games at RFK just for the experience. The games are quite fun, as sporting events and opportunities for drunken hooligan-ery, two things i greatly enjoy. I was at last night's game and the atmosphere was positively electric. I've never seen RFK so packed. I couldn't believe how many flashbulbs went off when Beckham got off the bench to warm up. I can't wait until the next game, but next time i will make sure to get there even earlier so I can get more wasted in the lots.

I'd rather see Sporty Spice playing Skittles than Beckham waxing a begonia.

Beckham, Feckham, the only people buying that hags stuff are the illegal immigrants, who love soccer. Real Americans know Football has started now and nobody gives a rat's ass about soccer.

I don't know why Americans, and I am one, feel so threatened with soccer. When I was in High School in the early 80's they wouldn't allow a soccer team because they were afraid they would lose their players to soccer. Wrong. Now all schools and colleges have both and I don't see football suffering at all. All I can say is the soccer players have to have great stamina to play like they do without the changing of the downs like football has and they go head to head with no helmets. I've seen a lot of kids knocked out on the field from that. I think there is room for both and since America is full of people from all over the world I think it is nice if soccer grows. Sports are good for everyone.

Another made up "celebrity" for European starved liberal hollywood types. Soccer will always be an afterthought sport in the US. It has nothing to do with our superiority in sports in general..its simply that we have way too many sports to get involved with, that we dont have to settle for soccer like many third world countries have to. So you have European sports star with a European twit hasbeen popstar for a wife getting paid millions to play a game that most people in the US dont care about.....but hey...she sells magazines...US, and other hollywood gossip mags.

As for the physical aspects of soccer...yes you need to have cardio-vascular aspects to stay running back and forth like that. As for getting knocked out...its simply players that play bad do that. In soccer its not supposed to be a contact sport. Except for legs as they attack the ball, they penalize people for any kind of "check". Soccer is still basically a sport where you have to have good cardio to do well. If you want a REAL sport..try Australian Rules Football. Combination of american football, rugby and soccer. You tackle, run, kick with little padding. Not sure how many soccer "stars" go into ARF....probably not alot...too afraid of contact.
