Well, now. Eric Wynalda is the all-time leading scorer for the U.S. national soccer team. He's also a soccer analyst for ABC. But he could stand to be a little more diplomatic while giving interviews.During a discussion with the soccer blog Fulham USA, Wynalda was asked who he thought would be a big influence on American soccer. He answered that he hoped ESPN would help market the sport. And then he took a shot at one of ESPN's employees, Jim Rome:
Jim Rome can suck my d---! And he should be very afraid, because I'm the kind of guy, if I get too many drinks in me, I will club his a--. I've been on with Jim Rome, and I said, "Let me get this straight, you're more impressed with water polo???"
OK, so Rome likes water polo better than soccer. I'm not sure how threatening to club Rome's a-- is the way to get more favorable coverage on the Worldwide Leader.

Now let me see, What's more important talking about it or DOING IT ? ...... Well I'll have to say What I alway's say, Rome is just another hack another sports writer, analist, calebraty like the rest of them that can only talk and not be able to do.For the ratings he has said some of the stupid things that almost got him knocked out by one athleat.Some of the predictions he's made are as good as his talent for playing any of the sports he covers which is lousy. But he like the others like him steal there paychecks every week and laugh all the way to the bank.Personaly I would like to see Rome get in good enough shape to be able to run for an hour or so like the soccer player and then just keep going until he finds a five doller an hour job, because thats all he and the rest of all these high paid sports writers and anelists are worth. Thats all I have to say.

Beating Jim Rome is completely fair. His tough guy schtick on the radio is asking for someone to show again, as Jim Everett did, just how tough Rome is. If you mouthed off in a bar 10 percent as much as he does, you'd expect some meathead to step to you eventually. Why not send Rome to the bar and find someone who likes to actually talk about sports to talk about sports on the radio?

Wow, this last guy here just proves what happens when you give ignorant high school dropouts a computer and keyboard, or should I say komputar and kebord. What is wrong with you? Of course you can't relate to someone like Rome, it's over your 4th grade education level. Just because there are people out there that have a following and have an outlet, doesn't mean that they have to say exactly what you want them to say. If you've ever listened to Rome, he's not saying anything that rest of us aren't thinking.
Yes, it takes stamina to be a soccer player, but so does bicycle racing, triathlon, and other sports. The thing is, they aren't trying to be a spectator sport that is attempting to appeal to an american audience. If Rome is saying that soccer is boring and unwatchable, you can guarantee that most of the country is saying the same thing.
And yes, he maybe over paid, but that's because people like him. They like what he has to say and what he does. Eric Wynalda should be focusing on getting his sport to be the same, not calling out one descenting voice and trying to drum up publicity by being vulgar and ingnorant.

Rome is no hack and is one of the best in the business. Stealing paychecks? You are a friggin' idiot. The only ones that steal paychecks are athletes. Eric Wynalda is a wuss that needs to check himself because he does play soccer which will never ever be big time in the US.
Looks like it's a non-issue...Rome and Wynalda settled their differences on the air just now. Wynalda said his comments were misconstrued. Wynalda doesn't actually hate Rome and anyone who follows the Rome show knows this.
And about JR...anybody who hates soccer is OK in my book , as are 99.99999% of the sports talk show hosts and writers who insult American soccer. Why would that many American media members hate soccer unless it was the truth? Face it , Soccer is boring , and will never be as popular as the NFL , NBA , NHL , and NASCAR. Yes...even NHL is more popular than that joke of a sport. Take soccer out of this country , and no one would miss that crap.

Jim Rome isn't being paid for having a clue about sports or having the ability to play a sport; he is being paid to run his mouth; acting like he knows every freakin thing in the world. Most of the time his remarks are sarcastic, third grade slams. I think ESPN should come up with a show that slams Jim Rome. It would get better ratings.

Wynalda made a foolish mistake by falling for Jim Rome's anti-soccer gimmick...as that is all his hate for soccer is, a mere gimmick. His show is not intended as straight, objective news....so it should not be perceived that way. I would be sad to think that Rome does not in his heart of hearts have some appreciation for the most popular sport in the world, and one of the fastest growing in the US.
That all being said, I listened to his show today and he took the high road, then moved on. Paying more attention to Wynalda's comments would only heighten his visibility in the media and give more attention to soccer on his show, which he obviously does not want. I think Wynalda's bosses will have the last word when it is all said and done and Rome will still have a very healthy career built on smack offs and anti-soccer rants.
I play soccer everyday...and I laugh at his comments. They are intended to entertain...which is what Rome does best. Wynalda analyzes soccer best...so he should stick to that.

It goes on to say that "soccer is the fastest growing team sport in the United States." So, for those of you who believe soccer is going to just disappear maybe you should reconsider.
